Description du sujet de thèse
The CNRS LAPP (Laboratoire d'Annecy de Physique des Particules) institute is opening a PhD position. As a PhD student, you will develop analysis and observation strategies for gamma-ray pulsar signals to test the robustness of Lorentz invariance, using multi-instrument data (LST-1, CTAO, Fermi-LAT).
This work is part of the activities of the group dedicated to fundamental physics with Cherenkov telescopes, aiming to leverage high-precision gamma-ray observations to explore physics beyond the Standard Model.
The successful candidate will :
• Perform a combined analysis of pulsar data from LST-1 and Fermi-LAT to constrain Lorentz invariance.
• Apply advanced analysis methods, including the use of deep learning tools, to improve the detection and characterization of pulsed signals.
• Contribute to the preparation and coordination of a dedicated observation campaign of millisecond pulsars with LST-1.
• Design a scientific program for the future LST1-4 phase, including observation strategy and data analysis optimization.
• Assess the potential of different source classes (pulsars, AGN, GRBs) for testing Lorentz invariance violation.
• Disseminate results through scientific publications and participation in international conferences.
Knowledge: theoretical background
• Master's degree (M2) in high-energy physics and/or high-energy astrophysics
• Background in special relativity, astrophysics, fundamental physics or beyond the Standard Model
Skills: practical experience
• Scientific data analysis, particularly with Python and C++/ROOT
• Use of machine learning tools applied to complex datasets
Soft skills: expected attitudes and behaviors
• Scientific curiosity and ability to quickly learn new tools or methods
• Rigor in data analysis and result validation
• Team spirit and strong communication skills in a collaborative research environment
Contexte de travail
The LAPP (Laboratoire d'Annecy de Physique des Particules) is strongly involved in the CTAO (Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory) project, through major contributions to the construction of the Large-Sized Telescopes (LSTs), the development of analysis software, and the scientific exploitation of the telescopes. Scientifically, the group focuses on the study of transient and variable sources such as AGNs and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), as well as on tests of fundamental physics, in particular the search for Lorentz invariance violation (LIV).
This PhD project will take place within this dynamic context, directly connected to the scientific exploitation of the currently operational LST-1 telescope, and in preparation for the commissioning of three additional LSTs within the CTAO network.
