The candidate will perform high resolution laser spectroscopy of molecular gases confined in thin cells of nanometric thickness. The first task of the project will be to use QCL lasers emitting at 10.6µm to probe ammonia molecules close to surfaces and probe the fundamental Casimir-Polder interaction between the molecules and the thin cell windows. The second task will be to probe rovibrations of acetylene at 1530nm, to explore the possibility of fabricating compact frequency references at telecommunication wavelengths based on thin cell technology. The candidate will additionally work in collaboration with the group of Fetah Benabid in Limoges (Xlim) on the fabrication of a compact frequency reference based on hollow core fibre technology (hollow core fibres filled with acetylene). The performance of these two technologies, thin cells and hollow core fibres, will finally be characterised by comparison with a metrological reference.


After becoming familiar with the experimental techniques used in the LPL groups the candidat will be involved in the following activities :
1) Rovibrational spectroscopy inside nanometric thin cells filled with molecular gas and analysis of the spectral lineshapes to measure molecule-surface interactions.
2) Fabrication of sealed hollow core fibers filled with acetylene gas.
3) Locking a laser on the saturated absorption of acetylene gas confined in a hollow core fibre and characterisation of the laser frequency stability by comparison with a metrological reference.


The candidate should have a PhD in Physics and some experience in laser spectroscopy of atoms or molecules.

Work Context

The Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers (LPL) is at the north suburbs of Paris (10mins by train from gare du nord). The LPL groups work on light matter interaction experiments. The members of the host group are specialists of confined gas spectroscopy.
