Missions
The candidate will grow and characterize thin film heterostructures based on perovskite nickelates (RNiO3) doped with Ca or Sr ions. The carrier density will be measured by Hall effect and the valence of the different ionic species by in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy or by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The experimental activities will be complemented by DFT calculations, with the objective to reach a detailed and quantitative understanding of doping in this family of complex oxides.
Activities
- Synthesis of ceramic targets
- Thin film growth by pulsed laser deposition
- Characterization by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy
- Magnetotransport experiments
- X-ray spectroscopy experiments
- Data analysis and modelling
- DFT calculations using VASP
- Writing reports and research papers
Skills
- Condensed matter physics (required)
- Knowledge of perovskite oxides in thin film form (required)
- Solid-state chemistry (optional)
- Thin film growth by pulsed laser deposition (required)
- Transport measurements (optional)
- DFT calculations (required)
- XPS and photoemission spectroscopy (optional)
- Optical and/or electron beam lithography (optional)
- Programming in Matlab, Labview, etc (optional)
- Excellent organization and scientific writing skills (required)

Work Context
The project will be performed mostly at the Unité Mixte de Physique CNRS/Thales laboratory (UMPhy) located in Palaiseau on the Université Paris-Saclay campus. The Oxitronics tem of UMPhy is recognized at the highest international level for its expertise in oxide electronics and oxide spintronics. DFT measurements will be performed with a computation cluster available in the lab, with strong support from Julien Varignon from ENSICaen.
