Job Description

Thesis Subject

The PhD project focuses on research in mathematical optimization and its applications to machine learning and artificial intelligence, with a particular emphasis on the development and analysis of efficient numerical methods for training large-scale models. The research will investigate acceleration techniques for optimization algorithms, including accelerated gradient methods, stochastic and adaptive approaches, as well as preconditioning strategies, with the aim of improving computational performance in very high-dimensional settings. A significant part of the project will be devoted to the theoretical analysis of the convergence properties and algorithmic complexity of these methods, especially in the non-convex frameworks encountered in deep learning, in order to better understand the trade-offs between accuracy, computational speed, robustness, and computational cost. These theoretical developments will be complemented by extensive numerical experiments on contemporary artificial intelligence models, including large-scale performance studies, distributed computing issues, and constraints related to memory and energy efficiency. The PhD candidate will work in a research environment at the intersection of applied mathematics, optimization, statistical learning, and scientific computing, with the opportunity to contribute both to fundamental advances and to the development of tools directly relevant to modern artificial intelligence applications.
