Description of the thesis topic

The ERC project SEISMAZE is aimed at studies of slow transient energy release processes in geological systems based on seismological observations.
The proposed 3-year PhD position is focused on analysis (including machine-learning approaches) of low frequency seismic tremors and earthquakes. These signals are characterized by high variability (in particular, those observed in the vicinity of volcanoes) making complex the tasks of their detection and of distinction between different types of activities. The goal of this project is to develop automatic methods for detection and classification of low-frequency seismic tremors and earthquakes based on machine learning. The work is expected to be mainly focused on the seismo-volcanic dataset from Kamchatka with possible applications of developed methods in other regions.
One of the central activities of this project is the development of new methods for analysis of seismic tremors and low-frequency earthquakes (LFE) and their application to large datasets from volcanic areas (Kamchatka).
At the time of appointment, the successful PhD candidate must have a MS or an equivalent degree geophysics, data science, applied mathematics, physics, or a closely related field. Expected skills include geophysics (seismology), signal analysis, machine learning and programming (preferentially python-based).

Work Context

L'Institut des Sciences de la Terre (ISTerre) is a joint research unit (UGA / CNRS/ USMB / IRD / IFSTTAR) of nearly 300 people. This unit is part of the Observatoire des sciences de l'univers de Grenoble (OSUG) and the PAGE Pole of Research of the Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA). More information at
Organized into 10 research teams, the scientific objective of the unit is the physical and chemical study of the planet Earth, with a particular focus on the coupling between observations of natural objects, experimentation and modelling of associated complex processes.
The doctoral student will be part of the Ondes team comprising 65 researchers, post-doctoral fellows and doctoral students.
