Missions

Nanoelectrochemistry is a highly interdisciplinary research field combining nanofabrication, ultimate measurements, and expertise in both chemistry and solid-state physics. In this context, we propose to implement the recently introduced technique [PRL 130, 218001 (2023)] consisting of measuring the charge/discharge noise of electrons from a DNA redox marker to achieve the sensitivity of a few molecules or even a single molecule, without requiring amplification methods such as redox-cycling. This technique will then be used for molecular recognition by aptamers (biosensors) and to understand the origin of the low activation energies of certain biomolecules during charge transfer.

Activities

The research activities are very diverse, including nanofabrication in a cleanroom of nanoelectrodes (down to 10 nm in diameter), surface chemistry (down to single DNA molecules), microfluidics, and ultimate electrochemical measurements. Furthermore, the theoretical aspect can be explored if the candidate is interested, particularly using our Qbiol software.

Skills

The candidate must have expertise in at least one of the mission's domains (nanofabrication, nanoelectrochemistry, or the study of ultimate biomolecular systems). The remaining skills can be acquired on-site.

Work Context

The host laboratory will be the LIMMS (IRL2820), an international unit of the CNRS located on the Komaba campus of the University of Tokyo, one of the most prestigious universities in Asia. The team has been working on these themes for a long time, particularly on instrumentation, which always needs to be pushed to its limits.

The work environment within the S.H. Kim lab is extremely interdisciplinary, with the presence of biologists, chemists, physicists, and technologists.

Constraints and risks

Located in Tokyo, the nanofabrication is carried out on another campus of the University of Tokyo (Hongo).
