Missions
Performance is at the heart of the Western classical music tradition. Yet we know very little about how today's classical music audiences view the practice of performance and the values that generally underly it (fidelity, authenticity, creativity, etc.). The aim of the P-VALUES project is precisely to probe these representations in greater detail, in association with the Sciences et Technologies de la Musique et du Son laboratory (CNRS-IRCAM) and the Cité de la Musique - Philharmonie de Paris, and by combining the methods of experimental philosophy and the sociology of music.
Activités
As part of the P-VALUES project, the post-doctoral fellow will develop a series of textual vignettes presenting various thought experiments on the subject of musical performance, drawing on existing philosophical literature on the subject (e.g., Peter Kivy, Authenticities, 1995; Julian Dodd, Being True to Works of Music, 2020; etc.). These vignettes will then be presented to subscribers to the Philharmonie de Paris, in order to systematically collect data on the public's intuitions. This collection will take the form of a series of 6 to 8 workshops, each time bringing together 30 to 40 Philharmonie de Paris subscribers. These workshops will be organized in consultation with the Philharmonie de Paris.
Compétences
The successful candidate is expected to have expertise in the musicology of performance and/or the analytical philosophy of music. Experience in mediation would also be welcome, as the person recruited will also be in charge of organizing workshops with the public at the Philharmonie de Paris.
Contexte de travail
The post-doctoral fellow will be attached to the Analyse des Pratiques Musicales team at Ircam, and will work under the supervision of Clément Canonne (Director of Research at CNRS
