The recruited candidate will join the Terahertz (THz) Photonics Group of the Institute of Electronics in Microelectronics and Nanotechnology in Villeneuve d'Ascq (IEMN). Its mission will be to study new probes for near-field microscopy in the terahertz range (THz). The candidate will perform certain stages of sample and probes preparation and must master the use of the near-field microscope.


The main objective of the activity will be to develop and use a near-field optical microscope in the terahertz range (wavelength between 100 to 1000 µm). The major part of the study will focus on the study of new probes optimized for this frequency range. These probes will be specifically fabricated by the NAM6 group of IEMN and the Vmicro company that are specialized in the conception and fabrication of MEMS and local probes. The near-field microscope is based on an atomic force microscope (AFM). The AFM probe is used as a scattering tip in order to carry out the optical image simultaneously with the measurement of the topography of the sample (scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy or s-SNOM technique).

Different kind of samples will be tested and the performances of the different probes will be compared for different kind of samples. A terahertz gas laser will be used as a light source and a cryogenic bolometer will be used as a detector. Other detection schemes will be also tested. Some experiments will be also done at the AILES beamline of the SOLEIL Synchrotron. The recruited candidate will be involved in the preparation of the samples and the microscope, the use of the near field microscope and the interpretation of the results. Other experimental characterization techniques can also be used to complete the SNOM.


The candidate must have a doctoral thesis specializing in micro – nanotechnology or material science, if possible in the field of local probe microscopy (AFM, STM, SNOM, etc.). Advanced knowledge in optics or in the field of optical near-field microscopy (SNOM) would be a plus. Laser safety training would also be a plus.
Experience in clean room technology processes would also be welcome in order to perform some sample preparation.

Work Context

The candidate will join the THz Photonics group of IEMN which is specialized in THz and MIR components and devices. The group has expertise in simulation, characterization, technological manufacturing of devices and in near field microscopy in the THz and MIR ranges. The work will be done in close collaboration with the NAM6 group of IEMN and the Vmicro company. The microscope is located in the IEMN characterization platform (Villeneuve d'Ascq) but some experiments will be done during beamtime at the SOLEIL synchrotron (Saint-Aubin, south of Paris).
The candidate will work within the framework of a consortium of the ANR HYPSTER project grouping together IEMN, the Vmicro company, the SOLEIL synchrotron and the CEA/Saclay SPEC. The exact duration of the contract will depend on the experience of the candidate recruited.
