Missions
Communications in vehicular networks are becoming increasingly important in the scientific community. Today, these networks are used in a multitude of applications ranging from intelligent autonomous driving to vehicle convoy management. Over the next few years, the need for this type of system is set to grow considerably, due to the intensive urbanization of cities, the considerable energy costs and environmental impact of today's means of transport, and the increasingly stringent requirements in terms of road safety and user driving experience (comfort, infotainment).
Managing communications between vehicles and the network infrastructure (V2I) poses numerous technical constraints, such as the need for high reliability and ultra-low latency in command transmission, a high level of communications security, and the need for a high degree of interoperability with other wireless or mobile networks, to name but a few. The development of these systems requires realistic modeling of these propagation channels.
The main difficulty lies in measuring this multi-dimensional (time-frequency and spatial) propagation channel. For this reason, a piece of measuring equipment known as a sounder has to take account of the channel's spatial and temporal variability, particularly in a mobile context. This equipment, developed in-house and called MaMIMOSA [1], is an integral part of the “Characterization and Electromagnetic Compatibility” cluster of the University of Lille and IEMN's “Plateforme de Caractérisations Multi-Physiques pour les micro/nano-dispositifs, les composants hautes fréquences et les systèmes communicants” accredited platform. As such, this equipment, unique in France and Europe, is available not only to the laboratory's teams, but also to all national and international research teams.
The person recruited will contribute to the implementation of experimental measurements of cell-free massive MIMO wireless networks under mobile conditions with the MaMIMOSA channel sounder developed in-house, the exploitation of the data generated by the sounder and the characterization of the propagation channel. The person recruited will work with the IEMN TELICE team to write the associated characterization reports, and will also take part in writing articles for international conferences and peer-reviewed journals. The cell-free mobile network is a new cell-free network architecture that emerged a few years ago, offering much more uniform coverage and increased connectivity than the cellular network. In particular, the safety-critical services envisaged in future vehicular networks rely specifically on uniform QoS.
