Missions
The successful candidate will join the ATLAS group at the LPSC. The candidate will work on the analysis of data collected by the ATLAS experiment during the LHC Run-3, for the search of Higgs boson pair production (HH) in the decay channel to bottom quark and tau lepton pairs. The main goal of this research will be the publication of the results for this analysis using the entirety of the LHC Run-3 dataset. Part of the research work will consist in the development of novel identification algorithm for tau lepton identification, as well as their calibration and deployment in the HH analysis.
The possibility to extend this research axis to the study of triple-Higgs (HHH) production processes in the decay channel to bottom quarks and tau leptons is foreseen, as well as the preparation of the statistical combination of multi-Higgs measurements with the whole LHC Run-3 dataset.
The ATLAS LPSC group has a strong commitment in the construction of the upgrade for the ATLAS inner tracker detector (ITk) for the High-Luminosity LHC phase.
The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the production of this new detector by integrating the ongoing group activity.
Activités
- Development of the HH analysis in the decay channel to bottom quark and tau lepton pairs with the whole LHC Run-3 dataset: analysis selection optimization, development and calibration of tau identification algorithms, trigger strategy optimization and control of related systematic effects (main activity)
- Transfer of analysis techniques developed for the HH analysis towards the search of HHH production in the decay channel to bottom quarks and tau leptons (secondary activity)
- Statistical combination of the main search channel for HH and HHH production for the determination of the Higgs self-coupling parameters (secondary activity)
- Contribution to the production of the upgraded ATLAS inner tracker ITk (secondary activity)
Compétences
- PhD/doctorate in physics, particle physics or a connected area
- Proven experience in LHC data analysis or a similar context
- Solid competencies in scientific programming
- Solid competencies to work in a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment
Contexte de travail
The Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie (LPSC) in Grenoble (http://lpsc.in2p3.fr), is a joint research unit of CNRS-IN2P3, Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), and Grenoble INP, with an average staff of around 230 people.
The selected candidate will join the ATLAS group, composed by 9 staff members of the LPSC, and under the coordination of the ATLAS group leader.
This position is opened in the framework of the physics program “Studying the Higgs sector with ATLAS at the LHC and prospects for the Future Circular Collider” financed by a CPJ CNRS position, which will include the recruitment with the LPSC ATLAS group of one PhD student and two postdocs during the period of 2025-2029, with a focus on the study of multi-Higgs production processes, supported by two LPSC agents. The successful candidate for this position will work in collaboration with this group.
The successful candidate will work in collaboration with the ATLAS LPSC group, as well as with the ATLAS Collaboration at large outside of the LPSC.
Regular trips to CERN are foreseen in the context of the research project, to participate to Collaboration meetings and possibly to detector operations.
One or more publications are foreseen as a result of the project. Communication via posters or public talks at conferences is also foreseen.
All results obtained in the context of the ATLAS Collaboration are required to be in open access once published, as well as the developed algorithms.
The LPSC is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community. We welcome applications from racialized persons/visible minorities, women, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities, and persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, as well as from all qualified candidates with the skills and knowledge to productively engage with diverse communities.
