Missions
Elaboration and characterization of carbon fibers based on biosourced precursor
Activities
The study will include several aspects, including the characterization of the fibers of biosourced precursors as produced and these same fibers at the different stages of their transformation to ultimately give carbon fibers. The optimization of heat treatments in relation to the specifications and targeted properties will be an important step and will be guided by a detailed analysis of the results.
Samples of biobased PAN precursor yarns will be provided by UCCS.
The LCTS has a continuous transformation line to control the treatment temperatures and the tension applied to the precursor wire during the oxidation/dehydrogenation-pyrolysis-carbonization-graphitation stages.
The candidate will have access to this means of continuous carbonization of the LCTS to evaluate the influence of the treatment conditions on the morphology and the characteristics of the filaments, as well as on the homogeneity of the treatment at the yarn level.
Particular attention will be paid to the characterization of the mechanical behavior of the fiber during its heat treatment. Analysis by TGA coupled FTIR, DSC and thermomechanical analysis (ATM) should provide information on both chemical transformation and material properties as a function of temperature.
The thermomechanical properties of the elaborated biosourced ex-PAN carbon fibers will be evaluated.
The post-doctoral fellow will propose a characterization methodology, carry out the tests and produce the corresponding periodic reports.
Skills
As PhD, you have a first professional experience.
You have basic knowledge of chemistry and physics. Autonomous, taste for experimentation, you are able to carry out characterizations and analyze the results.
Work Context
LCTS is a joint lab of CNRS, Bordeaux University, CEA and Safran, located on the Bordeaux Campus. It has 33 years experience in basic science research on refractory composites. These high-performance materials are used in aviation, space, energy & industrial applications. LCTS is single research team working in project-oriented mode, in strong relation with its non-academic stakeholders. There are currently 33 permanent staff, supervising 25 subjects led by doctoral or post-doctoral students.
These studies are part of the OSCAR project (ANR ASTRID 2021) in collaboration with UCCS, BKB Chemicals, CANOE and CEA.
