Job Description

Missions

This work involves developing a model for photovoltaic (PV) panels installed on top of buildings, deployed at the scale of a neighborhood or a city, while accounting for realistic weather conditions over the panels' lifecycle, in order to determine their annual electricity production. This scaling-up is made possible through the combination of Monte Carlo methods and computer graphics tools. Multi-physics and multi-scale phenomena are modeled in a probabilist framework leading to monolithic models formulated in path space.

Activity

We have three planned phases:
1/ Integration of the photovoltaic panel thermal model from Zacharie Ménard's PhD thesis into a coupled thermal model (conduction–convection–radiation) with variable meteorological conditions. The instantaneous power output can be computed and integrated over long time periods in order to estimate the panels' energy production.
2/ A sensitivity analysis of the energy produced with respect to different types of photovoltaic cells, the tilt angle, orientation, and number of panels can be performed in order to optimize their installation.
3/ To evaluate the performance of the panels, their aging must be taken into account. This task is challenging because it requires considering the thermal history of the panels and solving a nonlinear coupled problem between thermal behavior and the aging kinetics of the panels.
