Missions

Context: Calcium is a divalent alkaline earth metal with an extraordinarily strong oxidative ability in consideration of the – 2.87 V vs SHE (standard hydrogen electrode) redox potential for the Ca2+/Ca couple, to be compared to the – 3.04 V vs SHE of the lithium metal electrode, and ionic radium very similar to Na+. The theoretical properties of Ca metal electrodes for battery application, in terms of gravimetric and volumetric specific capacities (1337 mAh g-1 and 2059 mAh cm-3), overcome those of sodium (gravimetric, 1165 mAh g-1, and volumetric, 1130 mAh cm-2) and zinc (gravimetric, 819 mAh g-1), and are similar to the volumetric capacity of lithium (2062 mAh cm-3). Such appealing properties are due to a favourable combination of intermediate atomic weight and density. Overall, aprotic Ca-based battery chemistries can theoretically achieve the performance of interest and not far from those of lithium-based ones. Nevertheless, the research in the field is still in its infancy and, therefore, more research is required to fully reveal the potential of this promising chemistry.

As part of an international research project funded by the Research Council of Norway, the candidate will participate in pioneering studies dedicated to the development of new calcium batteries.
