Missions
The researcher will use the ISBA land surface model developped at CNRM to study the impact of recent climate change on the permafrost thermal state and its impact on soil organic matter. This work is a small part of the PEACE project that aims at studying how climate-driven degradation of permafrost and vegetation changes affect Arctic ecosystem C-N-P dynamics and transfers along the plant-soil-hydrosystem continuum. The focus will first be on the Abisko, Churchill and Zackenberg sites that have readily available atmospheric forcing, and fluxes of CO2 and CH4 needed to test the model. These sites are also studied by the othe Work Packages of the project. It will then be applied regionaly over the Northern latitudes. On the Abisko site, ISBA results will be compared with the detailed 3-D PermaFOAM cryohydrogeological model to gain a detailed knowledge of the lateral energy and water fluxes not represented by ISBA, and hence evaluate the potential effect of those on the carbon accumulation processes and CO2 emissions.
Activités
- 1D ISBA simulations on the Abisko, Churchill and Zackenberg sites
- pan-Arctic simulations with ISBA
- learning how to use permaFOAM
- gathering of data necessary to use permaFOAM on the Abisko site
- analysis and comparison of the ISBA and permaFOAM simulations on Abisko
- participation aux réflexions menées plus largement dans le projet PEACE du PEPR
- rédaction d'article scientifique
Compétences
- PhD in a one of the following domains: atmospheric sciences, meteorology, environmental sciences
- proficiency in progamming languages (Fortran, Python, etc.) with Linux ;
- good knowledge of land surface models like ISBA and interest in learning to use permaFOAM
- interest for physical and biogeochemical processes in permafrost soils
- understanding the challenges and opportunities related to the Arctic regions
- Experience in scientific communication
Contexte de travail
The recruited person will be based at the CNRM with Christine Delire and Bertrand Decharme and will have regular exchanges with Laurent Orgogozo (GET) regarding the use of PermaFOAM. He/she will participate more occasionally in the PEACE and FairCarboN project meetings.
Le poste se situe dans un secteur relevant de la protection du potentiel scientifique et technique (PPST), et nécessite donc, conformément à la réglementation, que votre arrivée soit autorisée par l'autorité compétente du MESR.
