Missions

Superheavy nuclei (SHN) owe their existence to their complex quantum mechanic configurations. The instrumentation required to study their synthesis and nuclear structure properties is the key for a successful exploration of the heaviest nuclear species. The Super Separator Spectrometer S3 at SPIRAL2 is designed to access isotopes with very low cross-section and investigate their production mechanism and nuclear structure. The decay spectroscopy detector set-up SIRIUS (Spectroscopy and Identification of Rare isotopes Using S3) will take advantage of the efficiency and mass resolution of S3 to study SHN.
The successful applicant will take the responsibility of the tests of the detector SIRIUS and its preparation for S3. She or He is expected to develop and conduct a research program with these instruments. The successful applicant will also take an active part in the research program of the group as well as in its experimental activities at SPIRAL2 and in other facilities.

Activités

• Testing the decay spectroscopy detector SIRIUS and installing it at S3.
• Developing her or his own research program by developing, proposing and performing experiments for SHN decay spectroscopy and/or rection studies at GANIL/SPIRAL2 and elsewhere.
• Taking an active role in developing the future research program at S3.
• Taking part in experiments involving the group at GANIL and eventually in other facilities.

Compétences

PhD in experimental physics, preferably in low-energy nuclear physics

Skills :
• Good knowledge of modern nuclear radiation detectors and electronics, data acquisition and control systems in nuclear science experiments
• Very good knowledge in scientific programming (C++, ROOT) for experimental data analysis platforms is mandatory.
• Good knowledge of Pulse Shape Analysis will be appreciated
• Good communication skills and a good command of spoken and written English.
Soft skills :
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to interact with international teams outside GANIL

Contexte de travail

The Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL) is a national research infrastructure based on the use of ion beams. Its fields of research are fundamental research in nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics, the study of materials under irradiation and nanostructuring, molecular collisions and the interstellar medium, radiobiology and innovative techniques for imaging and therapy of certain cancers.
GANIL (about 270 people) is located in France, in the city of Caen, in Normandy. It is managed jointly, within an Economic Interest Group (GIE) by the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA/DRF) and by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS/IN2P3). As a national research infrastructure, GANIL serves the national, European and international scientific community of about a thousand users.
The PHASE team is developing a program on the measurement of decay properties of Superheavy Nuclei, using the new Super Separator Spectrometer S3 and its detection setups SIRIUS and S3-LEB. The successful applicant will be taking an active part in the research program of the group as well as in its experimental activities at SPIRAL2 and in other facilities. The results of the work performed will be presented to international conferences and will be published in scientific journals.
The person recruited on a fixed two-year contract will be attached to the PHASE thematic team of 17 people, within the Research Activity Group (GAR). This group is part of the Physics Division
The person engaged by the CNRS will benefit from a number of holidays linked to the derogatory status of the GIE GANIL of the order of 53 days (32 CA and 21 JRTT) with a weekly work rate of 40 hours, and benefits of social action for CNRS agents of GANIL.

Le poste se situe dans un secteur relevant de la protection du potentiel scientifique et technique (PPST), et nécessite donc, conformément à la réglementation, que votre arrivée soit autorisée par l'autorité compétente du MESR.

Contraintes et risques

As GANIL is classified as a Basic Nuclear Installation (INB), the position is eligible for specific work constraints related to potential exposure to ionizing radiation.
The person engaged must be authorized to work in a supervised and controlled area in compliance with the regulations and procedures applicable to nuclear security and safety
