Description du sujet de thèse

The maximum capacity of digital data transportable by a single-mode optical fiber is limited and its value governed by Shannon's theory combined with the nonlinear effects which appear from a certain threshold of optical power in the fiber. This limit (close to 100Tb/s) was reached at the beginning of the 2000s and the implementation of spatial multiplexing of data is a promising solution to surpass it. For this, however, it is essential to use new optical fiber geometries allowing the transport of data on different spatial channels, whether modes or cores. In this context, multicore fibers have been widely studied and the final properties observed on data transport are largely governed by the coupling rate and therefore the level of crosstalk between the cores which depends on the opto-geometric properties of the fiber (refractive index profile of cores, core-to-core distances). …) but also the conditioning of the fibers (bending, local or distributed disturbances, etc.). During this thesis, you will study experimentally and theoretically the impact of light scattering mechanisms (Rayleigh and extra-losses known as SALS) on differential losses between cores and, above all, on inter-core couplings. The objective will be to evaluate the contribution of this process to the total crosstalk observed and to study the possibilities of minimizing it. The work will take place within the Photonics team of the PhLAM laboratory, which relies on the FiberTech Lille technological platform.

Contexte de travail

The thesis will take place within the framework of the European project MSCA-DN MATCH (https://match.iscte-iul.pt) and you will be required to spend 2 to 3 months in the project's partner laboratories, in particular at the ISCTE of Lisbon (Portugal) or the industry player Draka-Prysmian (France)
