Description of the thesis topic
The objective is to develop a statistical approach allowing the spatio-temporal reconstruction of glacier front trajectories that would be in line with the observed positions of the fronts and moraines. In statistical terms, this involves combining different likelihoods in a spatio-temporal context. The associated probabilistic question is to know, conditionally to the positions and dates of censored data (the undestroyed moraines), how to simulate random draws of the complete non-stationary spatio-temporal process (the positions of the fronts) associated with this censoring. The stochastic aspect makes it possible to take into account uncertainties, and to perform sensitivity analyses. In addition, physical constraints linked to the upstream-downstream movement of the ice can be profitably integrated into the modeling. The working hypothesis is thus that a spatio-temporal hierarchical Bayesian model will effectively overcome these difficulties.
Work Context
The thesis will be co-supervised by N. Eckert (UR ETNA, INRAE / Université Grenoble Alpes), M. Peirera (Ecoles des Mines) and P. Naveau (LSCE, UMR CEA-CNRS-UVSQ). The complementarity between these teams will lead to interesting advances at the interfaces of statistics, the cryosphere and risk analysis.
