Job Description
Thesis Subject
Development of Bio-Based Green Solvents and Hydrotropes for Sustainable Formulation
Environmental and regulatory challenges are driving the development of new generations of solvents and formulation agents with reduced environmental and societal impacts while maintaining high functional performance. In this context, bio-based green solvents and hydrotropes represent promising alternatives to conventional petrochemical-derived compounds.
The aim of this PhD project is to develop novel families of compounds derived from renewable resources through chemical transformations carried out in accordance with the principles of green chemistry. The research will focus on the molecular design, synthesis, and physicochemical characterization of new solvents and hydrotropes intended for solubilization in non-polar and polar media, respectively. These compounds will be developed according to precise specifications tailored to the targeted applications. Their performance will also be assessed in various formulation contexts.
The project will further include a significant digital component, involving the use of molecular modeling, chemometric methods, and data science tools to predict new molecular structures and establish relationships between molecular structure and end-use properties.
This PhD project lies at the intersection of organic chemistry, physical chemistry, formulation science, and data science.
Your Work Environment
The PhD project will be carried out within the CÏSCO2 research team (Colloids, Catalysis and Oxidation) of the CNRS research unit UCCS (UMR 8181). The team is specialized in Formulation chemistry and physicochemistry and comprises eight teacher-researcher members from the University of Lille and Centrale Lille Institut, as well as one research engineer.
The PhD candidate will be enrolled in the SMRE Doctoral School and at Centrale Lille Institut. The thesis supervisor, Professor Véronique Nardello-Rataj, is a Full Professor at Centrale Lille Institut and Head of the CÏSCO2 research team.
Funded by the CNRS, the PhD project is conducted in collaboration with the E2P2L Laboratory (CNRS/Syensqo International Research Laboratory, IRL 3464), located in Shanghai. The project will be co-supervised by Dr. Pierre de Frémont.
The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary research environment combining organic synthesis, physicochemical characterization, and digital approaches, including modeling and data-driven methodologies.
