Job Description

Thesis Subject

This PhD project aims to investigate, both experimentally and theoretically, the Auger relaxation of solvated metal ions. The main objective is to understand how the nature of the ion, including its charge and ionic radius, its solvation shell, and its counter-ions govern the conversion of electronic relaxation energy into measurable kinetic energy.
In particular, the project will seek to determine the extent to which Auger emission in the liquid phase retains a local character or, conversely, becomes sensitive to the collective electronic dynamics of the solvated environment.
The experimental component will constitute a central part of the project. It will be based on Auger spectroscopy measurements performed on solutions of metal salts, notably at the GALAXIES beamline. Model systems will initially be investigated before extending the approach to chemical series in order to identify systematic trends, for example across Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Sr²⁺, and Ba²⁺ ions, or through comparisons between monovalent and divalent ions.
Concentration, counter-ions, and the solvent may modify the local structure of the liquid and will therefore be examined as key parameters. The aim will be to relate the observed spectral changes to the microscopic properties of the ionic environment.
Under the supervision of the project advisors, the PhD candidate will contribute to the preparation and writing of proposals submitted to programme committees to obtain beamtime, as well as to the preparation and performance of the corresponding experiments.

Your Work Environment

The successful candidate will be based at the LCPMR (Sorbonne University, Paris) and at the SOLEIL synchrotron, within a dynamic and internationally recognised scientific environment. The project brings together a multidisciplinary theoretical team, with expertise in electronic correlation theory and quantum chemistry, and an experimental team specialised in X-ray spectroscopy.
