Optimizing Healthcare Staff Scheduling to Improve Operational Efficiency and End-User Satisfaction

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed structural weaknesses in the hospital system, particularly in the management of healthcare staff schedules, which are often complex and inefficient. These schedules are still largely created manually or using inflexible software that is unable to account for the multitude of human, legal, organizational, and interdepartmental constraints. In a context marked by healthcare staff shortages, coordination challenges between hospital departments and sites, unforeseen absences, and the obligation to ensure continuity of care, the issue has become strategic. It is imperative to equip hospitals with intelligent tools capable of optimizing, adapting, and explaining scheduling decisions in real time.

The main objective of this project is to design an intelligent hospital scheduling management platform capable of automatically generating robust, equitable, and dynamic schedules. The solution will be based on three pillars:
1. Hybrid optimization models combining mathematical programming, evolutionary heuristics, and machine learning.

2. Digital twins to simulate different disruption scenarios (absences, overload, organizational change) and assess the robustness of schedules.

3. Language learning models (LLMs) to automatically interpret preferences, constraints, and rules expressed in natural language by practitioners or managers.
