Description du sujet de thèse

In the concept of deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste, metal containers play a key role in the safety of radioactive waste disposal. Among the candidate materials, copper and steel are being considered for their excellent corrosion resistance properties in reducing environments. However, studies conducted to date have mainly focused on water-saturated conditions, while the behavior of these metals in unsaturated environments, particularly in the presence of ionizing radiation, remains poorly documented.
The objective of this thesis is to study the corrosion mechanisms of copper and possibly other metals in unsaturated conditions under gamma irradiation, in particular the influence of humidity and radiolytic species generated in this context. The work will focus on the evaluation of key parameters such as corrosion rate, gas production, and the nature of the corrosion products formed on the surface.
The project will be based on a combined experimental approach: controlled atmosphere cells, gamma irradiation, and post-mortem analyses of corroded surfaces. This work will provide a better understanding of the mechanisms involved and assess the potential long-term evolution of copper containers in a geological repository's context.

Contexte de travail

The candidate must:
- Hold a master's degree or equivalent in materials chemistry, physical chemistry, or materials science, ideally with a specialization in the behavior of materials in extreme environments (corrosion, irradiation, solid/liquid/gas interfaces, etc.);
- Have experimental skills in: materials characterization techniques (e.g., SEM/EDS, XRD, spectroscopy, surface analysis), and corrosion testing.

The candidate must:
- Demonstrate strong motivation, rigor, curiosity, and autonomy.
- Fluency in English will be required.
- Be able to write scientific reports and present results orally in French and English.
- Be able to work both independently and collaboratively in an international team environment.

Le poste se situe dans un secteur relevant de la protection du potentiel scientifique et technique (PPST), et nécessite donc, conformément à la réglementation, que votre arrivée soit autorisée par l'autorité compétente du MESR.

Contraintes et risques

• Laboratory work involving the handling of potentially corrosive or irritating chemicals, requiring compliance with safety instructions and the wearing of personal protective equipment.
• Experiments carried out under controlled conditions (temperature, humidity, atmosphere), which may require regular monitoring of the devices.
• Access to equipment or facilities subject to specific radiation protection regulations (exposure to gamma-type radiation sources); training is provided at the start of the contract.
• Possible work in regulated areas with dosimetric monitoring.
• Occasional travel may be required for testing campaigns or access to partner experimental platforms.
