Job Description

Thesis Subject

Cosmological distance measurements from Type Ia Supernovae observations are central to understanding the recent expansion history of the Universe. In recent years, tensions have emerged between the theoretical predictions of the standard cosmological model and measurements of the Universe's expansion. This could indicate new fundamental physics, unless these measurements are skewed by unknown or poorly corrected biases, particularly in distance measurements derived from supernovae.

The main current challenge in this field is: how to correctly infer cosmological parameters given that supernovae vary with their environment and that selection effects impact all our measurements.

To validate the inference model, simulations are essential, but current tools are limited in their ability to describe supernovae in all their complexity. The goal of this PhD is to develop such simulations.

During this PhD, you will contribute to the development of skysurvey (skysurvey.readthedocs.io) to build a new-generation simulation tool.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

Incorporating models of supernova population evolution.
Validating these models using “volume-limited” data.
Providing the necessary tools for inference pipelines to estimate cosmological parameters.
Accurately assessing the amplitude of astrophysical biases associated with supernova-based cosmological measurements.

This is currently a central issue in the field (Vincenzi et al. 2024). Some of the required volume-limited data are already available (ZTF, Rigault et al. 2025), while the rest will arrive in the next two years with the advent of LSST (currently in commissioning).

Your Work Environment

By joining our team, you will contribute to major discoveries in cosmology within the cosmology group of IP2I (Institut de Physique des 2 Infinis de Lyon), a laboratory of excellence of the CNRS and the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1. You will be part of two leading international collaborations: LSST (Legacy Survey of Space and Time) and ZTF Cosmology (Zwicky Transient Facility), projects that push back the limits of our understanding of the Universe.
