Description of the thesis topic

As part of a research project entitled SOLHYD, the PhD fellow's main task will be dedicated to studying (syntheses and characterizations) of new aluminum-based materials and exploring their potential as solid-state hydrogen storage materials. Besides the training through research, the fellow will have to participate to 100 h of additional training (as proposed by the Doctorate School ED459).

Activity :
• Syntheses of aluminum-and hydrogen-based materials, under inert atmosphere
• Molecular, structural, thermal and calorimetric analyses of the synthesized materials
• Analyses of their chemical and thermal stabilities by using the ad hoc techniques
• Investigation of their dehydrogenation properties and of their dehydrogenation products (solid, gaseous, and liquid if any)
• Exploring the rehydrogenation of the products recovered upon dehydrogenation

Skills :
er degree in chemistry or physicochemistry of materials
• Syntheses of inorganic materials under inert atmosphere (argon-filled glove box, and vacuum line)
• Experience as user of one or more of the following analysis techniques: e.g. NMR, XRD, TGA, DSC, FTIR, Raman, and so forth.
• Experience, or knowledge, about boron and/or aluminum chemistry (as well as that of the other elements in the same column of the periodic table)
• Experience in hydrogen storage materials
• Expected qualities: autonomy, rigor, team spirit

The "Institut Européen des Membranes" (IEM), founded in 1994 is a reference laboratory at the international level in the field of membrane materials and processes with research objectives based on a multidisciplinary approach and multi-scale:

- the development and characterization of new membrane materials;
- their implementation in membrane processes (effluent treatment, gas separation, biotechnologies related to food science and health....)
