Description of the thesis topic

This doctoral research project originates from the request of two Lyonese CNRS research laboratories : LMFA and EVS by the firemen divers of the SDMIS (Departmental and Metropolitan Rescue and Fire Service). The rescue of drowning victims, which is very efficient as long as they are floating, is much less efficient when they have sunk. This is due to physical factors (size of the Rhône and Saône rivers, currents, turbidity, heterogeneous and cluttered bottom, etc.) and to the lack of knowledge about the dynamics of a drowned body. This project aims to improve both prevention and rescue.

Work Context

Activities will focus on:
(i) on the analysis of the conditions that lead to drowning, in particular with the construction and analysis of a database of drownings;
(ii) on a more precise evaluation of the victim under water, in particular from in situ experiments.
The thesis, planned for the Doctoral School "SHS in Lyon", will nevertheless rely on various disciplines ranging from geography to sociology or hydraulics. This project strongly implies the SDMIS, with as a natural finality the continuous training of the staff.
