Job Description
Thesis Subject
Title: Selenium Isotopic Signatures in Biota: From Analytical Development to Biological Applications
Selenium (Se) is an essential element in living organisms. Despite its biological relevance, the investigations of Se isotopic signatures in biological samples are rare and restricted to few examples in bacteria, algae, and plants. This is largely due to the difficulty associated to precise Se isotopic ratio measurements in biological samples, which requires advanced analytical strategies to overcome it. The main aim of this PhD thesis is to fill this gap by the development of adequate analytical strategies from sample preparation until Se isotopic characterization by MC-ICPMS. The developed approach will be applied to track Se dynamics in relevant biological samples, combining wild fish and from controlled experiments and riverside Amazon population.
Your Work Environment
This work will be carried out in the frame on an international and multidisciplinary context, specifically the projects ERC Consolidator Grant SeMER and ANR PRCI SeMerAMAZON (https://anr.fr/Projet-ANR-22-CE34-0020) in close collaboration with Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA) and INRAE.
The PhD will principally work at IPREM, specifically, he/she will be member of the Environmental Chemistry and Microbiology Cluster. The working group has a vast experience on environmental and analytical chemistry, trace metal speciation, stable isotope tracers and fractionation mechanisms. To reach the outlined objectives, the project will be supported by the unique instrumental facilities of the host laboratory. This platform possesses, among others, the state of the art instruments required for the thesis project (MC-ICP-MS, HPLC/GC-ICPMS, LC-ESI-MS/MS).
