Job Description

Thesis Subject

Hail represents a major atmospheric hazard in Europe, responsible for costly economic damage. Its formation within deep convective clouds strongly depends on microphysical processes governing mixed-phase hydrometeors, which are still imperfectly represented in forecast models. The convective-scale weather model AROME operationally uses the microphysical scheme ICE3, in which hail is not explicitly predicted. Another, more advanced microphysical scheme - LIMA - improves certain aspects of convection but exhibits biases in the cold part of clouds.
This thesis aims to improve hail forecasting with AROME by strengthening the prognostic representation of graupel and hail in LIMA, through the addition of variables describing the density and liquid water fraction of solid hydrometeors. The new configurations will be evaluated on well-documented cases and then on a large sample of convective situations, drawing on polarimetric radar observations, surface observations (ESWD), and radar-based hail size diagnostics (MESH). The ultimate goal is to improve the representation of hail in AROME, for the benefit of operational forecasting of hail occurrence and size at the surface, and ultimately, hail risk studies in a future climate.
