Missions

Contribute to the success of the ANR-DFG “PhysioLab” project, particularly by establishing the text of the Latin versions y and b of the Physiologus.

Activités

- Work closely with other research team members to achieve the project's goals, particularly by comparing the Latin, Greek, Armenian, and Syriac texts (the last two in translation).
- Collate all identified Latin manuscripts of versions y and b using an XML-TEI markup environment (training will be provided).
- Establish the text of Latin versions y and b in coordination with the French project PI.
- Participate in discussions regarding the development of the markup tool, the internal comparison platform, and the functionalities of the multilingual edition's consultation website.
- Contribute to the project's outreach through various channels (including a research blog on the Hypothèses scientific blogging platform).
- Identify, as far as possible, the sources of the text.
- Collaborate with the Sources Chrétiennes team to integrate biblical references from the text into the Biblindex database (https://www.biblindex.org/fr).

- Full proficiency in Latin
- Good knowledge of Greek
- Full proficiency in English or French
- Expertise in philology, textual criticism, and ecdotics
- Solid knowledge and experience in early medieval Latin paleography
- Familiarity with tools and resources for identification of sources
- Good understanding of the history of medieval texts
- General knowledge of digital humanities and TEI (Text Encoding Initiative)

Contexte de travail

The contract is part of the French team of the ANR-DFG “PhysioLab” project (The Physiologus in the Digital Laboratory: The Earliest Form of a Multilingual Tradition), which aims to provide a new digital and print edition of the oldest versions of the text: Greek, Latin, Syriac, and Armenian. The French team is responsible for establishing the text of the Latin versions y and b of the Physiologus.
The postdoctoral fellow will be affiliated with the Latin section of the Institut de Recherche et d'Histoire des Textes (IRHT) as part of the ANR-DFG “PhysioLab” project, in collaboration with the CSMC in Hamburg (Caroline Macé). They will work under the scientific supervision of Emmanuelle Kuhry, research engineer in the Latin section of IRHT and French PI of the project.
The Institut de Recherche et d'Histoire des Textes is a CNRS research unit dedicated to fundamental research on medieval manuscripts and early printed books. It covers all aspects of the history of texts written in the main cultural languages of the Mediterranean region, including Latin and Greek: material supports of writing, script and decoration, textual content, iconography, dissemination, and reception.
The postdoctoral fellow will be able to work remotely one or two days per week. The position can be based either at Orléans La Source, at the Augustin Thierry Center (CNRS campus), or at Aubervilliers, on the Condorcet campus, in the IRHT premises (building “Recherche Nord”).
Missions in France or abroad may be organized. The project includes several trips to Hamburg and one to Lyon.
The position is 12 months, renewable twice. The total duration of the project is 36 months.The preferred start date is September 1st, with possible adjustments until November.
