Job Description
Missions
The objective of NanoPhiA is to develop a predictive tool capable of determining the structure of nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by physical routes based solely on the knowledge of experimental conditions. The project integrates advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques with complementary experimental and computational approaches to establish a direct, quantitative link between synthesis parameters and the resulting nanoparticle structure. It combines in situ thermodynamic measurements during synthesis with atomic-resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) to provide precise structural characterization at the nanoscale. These experimental insights are further complemented by machine-learning-assisted molecular dynamics simulations performed by a partner laboratory.
For the methodological development, we focus on oxides with increasing chemical complexity — ZnO, CuxOy puis ZnxCuyOz. These materials are highly relevant for catalysis and biomedical applications and exhibit significant structural richness, including potential size-dependent polymorphism. This makes them well-suited model systems for establishing clear correlations between synthesis conditions and the resulting nanoparticle structure.
At CEMES, nanoparticles will be produced via gas-phase synthesis in an ultra-high vacuum device. A comprehensive structural characterization of the NPs will be carried out using advanced electron microscopy techniques. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) will be used to determine nanoparticle size, morphology, and structure. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM — STEM-EDX, STEM-HAADF, STEM-EELS) will provide advanced chemical and structural characterization of the nanoparticles, including determination of their oxidation states.
Activity
- Gas-phase synthesis of ZnO, CuxOy and ZnxCuyOz nanoparticles
- Complete structural characterization of nanoparticles by TEM (HRTEM, STEM-EDX, STEM-HAADF, STEM-EELS)
- Literature review
- Data analysis
- Publication of articles and report writing
Your Profil
Skills
For this postdoctoral position, we are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a PhD in experimental condensed matter physics or materials science and demonstrated expertise in transmission electron microscopy (TEM and STEM) for the investigation of nanoparticles with sizes below 10 nm. The candidate should be proficient in conventional TEM and HRTEM, as well as advanced STEM modalities including HAADF imaging, STEM-EDX and STEM-EELS.
Prior experience in the fabrication of nanoparticles using ultra-high vacuum physical synthesis approaches (e.g. plasma-based or gas-phase techniques) will be highly valued. Furthermore, knowledge of nanoparticle nucleation and growth mechanisms will be considered an important advantage.
Your Work Environment
CEMES is a fundamental research laboratory in condensed matter physics, nanoscience, molecular chemistry, and materials science. Its activities cover a broad spectrum ranging from the synthesis of (nano)materials and molecular systems to the study and modeling of their structures and physical properties (optical, mechanical, electronic, and magnetic), as well as their integration into devices.
