Missions

The postdoctoral researcher recruited will work on the ANR METAFOR project, in collaboration with researchers from the CNRS-ICARE laboratory, on the topic of metal particle combustion.
Their main tasks will be:
1. To experimentally study the combustion of isolated aluminium microparticles in order to limit the formation of alumina nanoparticles
- Learning to use the experimental device available at CNRS-ICARE (electrostatic levitator) for stabilising isolated particles
- Mapping ignition and combustion times according to particle purity and ambient conditions.
- Identify the control parameters influencing the formation of nano-oxides and establish quantitative relationships between parameters (oxygen levels) and observed phenomena.
- Compare experimental data with nucleation, growth and agglomeration models.
2. Develop and characterise a new turbulent burner fuelled by aluminium microparticles
- Develop a turbulent burner capable of stabilising a flame fuelled by aluminium particles
- Study the mechanisms of particle stabilisation and combustion in complex turbulent flows.
- Characterise in detail the interactions between particles and turbulence under reactive conditions.
- Build an original experimental database on collective combustion processes and their impact on emissions (nanoparticles, NOx).

Activities

The activities will be as follows:
- Design, development and implementation of suitable experimental benches.
- Definition of operating conditions and development of test matrices.
- Advanced use of optical diagnostics: PIV, PTV, chemiluminescence, Mie scattering, LII, etc.
- Analysis and interpretation of experimental results.
- Contribution to project reports, scientific publications and presentations at international conferences.
- Collaborative work with the project's academic partners.

Skills

The candidate must have the following skills:
Know-how:
- Proven experience in experimental combustion.
- Good mastery of optical diagnostics applied to reactive flows.
- Skills in designing and developing complex experimental devices.
- Data analysis skills (Matlab, Python or equivalent).
Interpersonal skills:
- Autonomy, experimental rigor and spirit of initiative.
- Ability to work in a team in a collaborative context.
- Motivation to contribute to an ambitious and interdisciplinary research project.

Work Context

At the CNRS, at the ICARE laboratory UPR3021, located on the CNRS campus in Orléans, the candidate will join the PC team. The ANR project METAFOR aims to improve the understanding of metal particle combustion mechanisms in order to develop new energy conversion systems that are more efficient and cleaner.

CARE is an Unité Propre of the CNRS attached to the Engineering department whose main research themes are Combustion and Reactive Systems, Atmosphere and Environment as well as Space Propulsion and Atmospheric Inputs. The laboratory is composed of 8 researchers, 15 teacher-researchers, 15ITA and about thirty doctoral students and postdocs. The laboratory is composed of a group of 3 buildings located on the CNRS campus in Orléans-la-Source.
