Missions

The work of the engineer will be focused on the development of a method for the synthesis of thorium chloride (ThCl4)

Activities

To carry out these missions, the engineer will have to study different ThCl4 synthesis routes. This compound can be prepared using thorium oxide (ThO2) and thorium nitrate (Th(NO3)4) supplied by Solvay. Different processes will have to be tested (synthesis in aqueous media or by liquid/liquid extraction) to determine the optimal synthesis conditions. The synthesis yields will be determined by ICP/AES and the purity of the product obtained will be checked by different analytical techniques.

Skills

The candidate must hold a doctoral degree in analytical chemistry. The position requires solid knowledge of analytical and inorganic chemistry, with solid training as an experimental chemist. The candidate must also have good oral and written communication skills to present his results during work meetings and at international congresses as well as to write reports and articles in scientific journals. We are looking for a young researcher who will be able to get involved in his project, having a certain autonomy and a strong motivation to develop skills in the field of the synthesis of an important compound in the nuclear field. In addition, the candidate must be able to work in a team using the various techniques made available to carry out his project. He will have to adapt to different work environments and manage this collaborative project. Indeed, IJCLab has laboratories to work with thorium in sufficient quantities and expertise in analytical chemistry, while SOLVAY has expertise in the field of synthesis and purification by liquid/liquid extraction.

Work Context

The Irène Joliot-Curie 2 Infinis Physics Laboratory is a physics laboratory under the supervision of the CNRS, the University of Paris-Saclay and the University of Paris, created in 2020 from the merger of the five UMRs located on the university campus d'Orsay. The research themes of the laboratory are nuclear physics, high energy physics, astroparticles and cosmology, theoretical physics, particle accelerators and detectors as well as technical research and development and associated applications for energy, health and the environment. The installation of a laboratory for the study of molten salts at Orsay in 2005 and the associated experimental devices made it possible to develop various projects, such as the concept of a fast-spectrum molten salt reactor, based on the Th/U nuclear cycles and U/Pu, in molten fluoride or chloride salts, the pyrochemical treatment of solid fuel, the corrosion of steels in molten salt environments, the chemistry of heat transfer salts based on molten nitrates for fast sodium reactors or solar power plants with concentration, the direct production of UF6(g) and its interaction with structural materials, the nitriding of low carbon steels in molten carbonate media or the dissolution of powdery metal waste in molten hydroxides.
This contract will be carried out in collaboration with SOLVAY. It will be carried out in the Energy and Environment pole of IJCLab. The host team has laboratories in a supervised area for experimental studies on nuclear materials, such as uranium and thorium, on a kilogram scale.

Constraints and risks

This work will involve significant quantities of thorium in the form of powders. The candidate will have to show great rigor when handling these radioactive powders. The facilities are under the supervision of the protection and risks department. The candidate must respect the recommendations of this service for work in a supervised area.
