Missions
The main objective of the project is to develop an instrument model to predict the performance and sensitivity of a future space mission for cosmology.
Activités
The candidate will be required to simulate the performance of a specific instrument using Python code in order to predict the sensitivity of a future space spectrometer dedicated to measuring spectral distortions in the cosmic microwave background. These activities will be carried out within the IAS Cosmology team, but also in conjunction with an international collaboration involving scientific and technical staff.
The candidate will also be required to document the codes developed and produce a user manual.
Compétences
Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in cosmology. Knowledge of the science involved in modelling the cosmic microwave background and associated astrophysical foregrounds is required. An understanding of the physical processes that can create spectral distortions in the cosmic microwave background spectrum would be welcome.
Good coding experience will be necessary, as well as the ability to communicate easily in English. Knowledge of millimetre astrophysical instrumentation will be an asset.
Contexte de travail
The Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS) is seeking applications for a postdoctoral researcher position to work in the Cosmology team. This team consists of 10 researchers, 2 postdoctoral fellows and 10 doctoral students and has taken the lead in two new projects dedicated to measuring spectral distortions in the cosmic microwave background: a stratospheric balloon, BISOU, and a proposal for a new space mission, FOSSIL. The successful candidate will join these two projects to help optimise them using the instrument simulations obtained.
