Missions

Supported by the CNRS and attached to the Centre Norbert Elias at Aix-Marseille University, the SANDOSHS project focuses on the political and ethical issues surrounding the reuse of healthcare data - a practice that has been widely endorsed by public authorities since the late 2000s. At the crossroads of Science and Technology Studies (STS) and Data Studies, it focuses on work situations where groups of actors intervene on data to make it reusable. The main hypothesis is that this intervention is not just technical. It involves choices about the nature of the data, the knowledge it provides, the possible uses, and the forms of regulation. The ethical and political issues of data reuse are grounded in the data themselves. We mobilize ethnographic surveys to follow how these issues are embodied in data production processes, what frictions they cause, and how they are resolved in practice. From an empirical point of view, the project focuses on health data work situations where the question of reuse arises. These situations punctuate the entire data journey, from production to centralization in databases and actual reuse. The person recruited will be involved in the SANDOSHS research project, conducting a qualitative fieldwork on a case of data reuse.

Activités

- Conducting a qualitative study: this post-doctorate will study the production and circulation of healthcare data in cases where the problem of reuse arises. This work certainly tackles technical issues, but also, and inseparably, important legal, social, ethical and economic ones. It conveys a set of norms and value judgments that weigh on our ways of representing an knowing health. Where does the data come from, who produces it, under what conditions and for what purpose? How are they linked to knowledge infrastructures? What are the desirable qualities of both the constituent data and the infrastructures produced when health data is assembled? What does this work change in terms of the knowledge produced about health? The study will focus on a case of healthcare data reuse, such as: the use and gathering of data from large epidemiological cohorts, issues related to hospital data warehouses, the use and matching of SNDS data, public or private algorithmic models based on healthcare databases. Tracking the work of those who produce and make circulate data will involve investigating cases of health data reuse, using qualitative methods (i.e. in-depth interviews, ethnographic observations, archives). Key players could typically include healthcare and digital professionals, companies involved in the development of digital health innovations, user associations, health research teams, or members of health authorities.

- Participating in the organization of a seminar on the reuse of healthcare data, in collaboration with the project supervisor.

- Producing high-quality research and publish results in scientific publications, in collaboration with project members.

Compétences

- PhD in social sciences, including anthropology, sociology, geography, political science and other relevant disciplines.
- Strong experience in the social sciences of health and/or the sciences;
- Excellent skills in writing and presenting academic papers;
- Solid experience in fieldwork, conducting semi-directive or non-directive interviews and/or ethnographic observation;
- Experience of ethnography in the worlds of care or health
- Fluency in French as the main working language for conducting fieldwork
- Fluency in English (possibly another foreign language) as the language of publication
- Ability to work independently, as part of a multidisciplinary team;
