Missions

The RE-IMAGINE-CROPS project is an ambitious EU-funded initiative addressing sustainable agriculture challenges through cutting-edge imaging technologies. This project aims to revolutionize nitrogen (N)-fertilizer application by developing the first real-time, in-field, portable, multimodal, multiscale Positron Emission Tomography - Multiphoton Endoscope (PET-ME) technology. The novel approach combines metabolic and cellular-level imaging, enabling precise tailoring of N-fertilizer use to optimize crop health and minimize ecological and economic losses.
Key goals of the project include:
● Real-time PET reconstruction for metabolic imaging at a micrometer scale.
● Advanced hydrodynamic modeling for fertilizer dispersion.
● Development of optical fiber-based multiphoton endoscopic systems for cellular imaging.
● Integration of tracer systems using innovative protein labeling technologies.

Activités

Position Description
We are seeking motivated individuals to join our multidisciplinary team as a Research Engineer at University of Lille (PhLAM laboratory), focusing on the development of hollow core optical fibers and their integration in portable multiphoton endoscope systems. The candidate will be in charge of:
● Designing and fabricating silica double-clad hollow core optical fibers,
● Performing their full geometrical and optical characterization
● Functionnalizing and preparing the fibers to make nonlinear endoscopic probes.
● Developing integrated components using hollow core fibers, such as fiber couplers, and integrating them into a portable multiphoton endoscope system.
The candidate will closely interact with engineers developing the multiphoton endoscope system (from Lightcore Technologies) and with researchers testing the endoscope (from Maastricht University).

Key Responsibilities
● Initiate and collaborate with all consortium partners to develop and implement multiphoton endoscopes for both in-lab and in-field applications.
● Conduct experiments and analyze results.
● Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.

Compétences

Requirements
● Advanced degree (Ph.D./MSc) in Physics.
● Expertise in optical fiber technology and photonics.
● Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
● Ability and enthusiasm to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment of optical engineers, (plant) biologists, chemists, and data management and analysis specialists.
● Excellent communication skills in English (both written and spoken).
● Experience in scientific publishing.

Preferred Qualifications
● Experience in optical fiber fabrication and hollow core fibers.
● Knowledge of EU project management and deliverables.
