Job Description

Missions

The position forms part of the activities of the LOA's IAR team, and more specifically within the field of aerosol metrology and the assessment of their impacts using data from the multi-wavelength lidars of the ATOLL-ACTRIS observation platform.
The laboratory has developed a lidar data inversion strategy, which has led to an initial version of the AUSTRAL automated processing system. This flexible system is based on various building blocks, notably a direct scattering model and an inverse model. It enables the reconstruction of vertical profiles of the optical and microphysical properties of aerosols, and subsequently the assessment of their atmospheric and climatic impacts.
The successful candidate will join the team responsible for the development, validation and scientific application of these tools. Their work will focus primarily on the implementation and validation of the BOREAL microphysical inversion branch of the AUSTRAL system, using independent datasets. They will also contribute to the enhancement of the inversion code and to the evaluation of the contribution of different scattering models (Mie, spheroidal, hexahedral and fractal) for the study of aerosol events detected from the ATOLL instrumented site, such as smoke plumes, desert dust, pollen, pollution episodes and aerosol mixtures.
Particular attention will be paid to adapting the algorithm to the LILAS and LIFE fluorescence lidars of the ATOLL instrument system. These developments will also contribute to the AREA CDP, within the framework of the 'Physical and chemical characterisation of aerosol properties' activity, particularly for the study of smoke plume properties.
Finally, this work will contribute to the utilisation of similar lidar data acquired by other French stations operating within the ACTRIS-FR research infrastructure.

Activity

The successful candidate will be responsible for the development, integration and validation of new modules (including BOREAL's microphysics module) and for analysing their performance using data from the ATOLL stations.

Your Profil

Skills

Your Work Environment

The Laboratory of Atmospheric Optics (LOA) is internationally recognised for its work on radiative transfer and inverse methods in atmospheric remote sensing using satellite-borne and ground-based instruments, with a focus on the study of aerosols. The LOA, in collaboration with NASA, founded the AERONET network. The LOA has created, operates and maintains an atmospheric platform (ATOLL) that enables continuous monitoring of the atmosphere's composition using a wide range of ground-based remote sensing instruments, notably several lidar systems (LILAS, METIS, LIFE), and in situ instruments. The aerosol remote sensing and in situ components of the platform form part of the ACTRIS infrastructure. Finally, the AUSTRAL automated lidar data processing system was developed at the LOA.
The post falls within the scope of the Protection of Scientific and Technical Potential (PPST) and therefore, in accordance with regulations, requires your appointment to be authorised by the competent authority
