Missions
The objective is to lay the groundwork for evaluating the environmental footprint of DNA storage and computing using life cycle assessment (LCA). This emerging technology promises a drastic reduction in the energy consumption of information storage and processing. The engineer will quantify these impacts in collaboration with experts in LCA and DNA nanotechnology.
Activities
- Conduct a prospective life cycle analysis of DNA storage and computing.
- Collect and analyze data on DNA synthesis, reading, and writing processes.
- Develop simulation models in Python/OpenLCA to estimate environmental impact.
- Collaborate with researchers in DNA nanotechnology and environmental engineering.
- Write scientific articles and participate in international conferences.
Skills
- Master's degree in environmental engineering, biotechnology, or equivalent.
- Programming skills (Python/R) and data analysis.
- Knowledge of environmental accounting (LCA, material flow analysis).
- Interest in emerging technologies and interdisciplinary research.
Work Context
The project will take place at the Laboratory of Spectroscopy for Interactions, Reactivity, and Environment (LASIRE) at the University of Lille, in collaboration with Bordeaux INP. Supervision will be provided by André Estévez-Torres and Philippe Loubet, experts in DNA nanotechnology and LCA. If the 4-month project goes well, there is a possibility to continue with a PhD for an additional 3 years on the same project.
The position is located in a sector under the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST), and therefore requires, in accordance with the regulations, that your arrival is authorized by the competent authority of the MESR.
Constraints and risks
- Handling complex data and modeling emerging systems.
- Need for adaptation to an interdisciplinary environment (chemistry, biology, engineering).
- Development of research and scientific writing skills.
- Travel between Lille and Bordeaux.
