Job Description
Missions
The project is centered on the first analysis of the SORBET (Spectroscopie des Ondes Radio et du Bruit Electrostatique Thermique) radio instrument, part of the PWI suite onboard the Mio (Mercury Magnetosphere Orbiter) spacecraft. It focuses on in situ plasma properties, especially on the electron measurements, to map the dynamics of the Mercury's magnetosphere due to its vicinity to the Sun, and its interaction with the solar wind during the nominal phase of the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission. High scientific return is expected. Nominal scientific observations are scheduled from April 2027.
Activity
The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the scientific exploitation of the SORBET instrument aboard BepiColombo.
The candidate will exploit the first dedicated in-situ measurements of the Hermean plasma environment, which are expected to provide new constraints on electron transport and acceleration, solar-wind–magnetosphere coupling, and the origin and dynamics of cold and suprathermal electrons at Mercury. The work will lead to peer-reviewed publications, scientific data products, which will be shared with the BepiColombo mission community and beyond.
Your Profil
Skills
A PhD in Space Plasma Physics or related fields is required.
Applicants should have completed their PhD or be able to complete it before taking up the fellowship starting begining of 2027.
Your Work Environment
The position is funded by the Dim-Origines program. The postdoctoral researcher will work within the LIRA's Heliosphere and Plasma in Astrophysics' team, hosted by the Paris observatory, which offers a stimulating scientific environment with direct access to data from PWI/SORBET, as well as from other instruments.
The postdoctoral researcher will be supervised by Ms Karine Issautier.
Close international collaboration can be developed with other members of the teams responsible for instruments involved in the BepiColombo mission.
Annual leave and RTT : 46 days
Possible telework (2 days/week)
Health insurance
Transport
75% of the cost is covered, and a sustainable mobility allowance of up to €300
Constraints and risks
In case of Mio insertion failure, the postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to work either on numerical simulations or on in-situ data obtained by Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter in the solar wind, and to analyse their data from planetary flybys (Earth, Venus).
