Missions
As part of the BioDivFun project, which aims to develop functional genomics tools for emerging models in marine biology, the Integrative Biology of Marine Models Laboratory is involved in the development of genetic transformation methods on several species of brown and red macroalgae. The candidate will deploy different genetic transformation methods on different life stages of model algae belonging to the genera Dictyota, Ectocarpus, Chondrus and Bangia. He/she will also set up optimal culture conditions, characterize the phenotype and maintain the mutant strains obtained.
Activités
The project will involve the maintenance and cultivation of algal strains to produce suitable plant material, the application of various molecular biology techniques (cloning and amplification of plasmids of interest) and genetic transformation following different DNA incorporation techniques to generate algal mutant strains. Phenotyping will use a range of different approaches, including morphometry and microscopy, molecular and cell biology approaches. Protocols are available in the host laboratory for all these approaches.
Compétences
The candidate should master macroalgal culture and propagation techniques, as well as standard molecular biology approaches, molecular cloning in bacterial systems and cell biology (microscopy). Statistical data processing skills will also be appreciated.
Contexte de travail
The host institute, the Station Biologique de Roscoff (SBR, http://www.sb-roscoff.fr/about-roscoff-marine-station/missions.html), is a centre of marine biology and oceanographic research situated in the town of Roscoff on the north coast of Brittany (France) about 60 km east of Brest. The SBR has about 200 permanent employees.
The position is funded by CNRS Biologie through the BioDivFun project. It will involve close interaction with members of the Mutualized Center for Research Support, particularly those of Algal Culture Facility, with BioDivFun's scientific coordinators within the laboratory, and with the other project partners.
