Job Description

Missions

The person hired will contribute to the technical and methodological development of the project, in direct support of the project lead.
The first task involves structuring and preparing the datasets required for the analysis of convective systems. This includes identifying, collecting, and harmonizing atmospheric data from reanalyses, satellite observations, and databases of convective hazards.
A second task consists of conducting exploratory analyses to test the project's scientific hypotheses. These analyses will focus in particular on atmospheric configurations associated with organized convective systems, as well as on environmental variables linked to intense precipitation and convective wind gusts.
The person hired will also contribute to the integration and use of high resolution atmospheric simulations, referred to as convection permitting simulations. The work will include extracting relevant diagnostics, analyzing the three dimensional structure of convective systems, and comparing results with the statistical approaches used in the project.
Another important task concerns documenting methodological choices and developing reproducible analysis tools. This includes implementing analysis scripts, organizing data workflows, and producing the figures and diagnostics required.
Finally, The person hired will contribute to the technical organization of scientific exchanges with the project partners.

Activity

The activities include in particular:
• preparation and structuring of atmospheric and convective event datasets
• development of analysis scripts in Python or MATLAB for climate data processing
• analysis of convection permitting simulations and extraction of physical diagnostics
• implementation of statistical or data driven analyses to characterize convective environments
• production of figures and exploratory analyses to support the scientific development of the project
• documentation of methods and organization of computational workflows
• participation in scientific meetings and exchanges with partner teams

Your Profil

Skills

Doctoral training in climate science, atmospheric physics, geophysics, or data science applied to environmental sciences. Strong proficiency in scientific data analysis and scientific programming (Python, MATLAB, or equivalent). Experience is desirable in at least one of the following areas: analysis of atmospheric reanalyses, atmospheric modeling or high resolution simulations, statistical analysis of extreme weather phenomena. Ability to work in close interaction with a researcher and to structure reproducible analyses.

Your Work Environment

The position is embedded in a research environment in climatology and atmospheric physics, with international collaborations focused on the study of extreme weather events and their attribution to climate change.

Constraints and risks

The position involves handling and processing large volumes of data, requiring rigorous organization and careful attention to the quality and traceability of analyses. The activities rely on computational environments and software tools that may evolve, requiring technical adaptability. The work takes place within a collaborative framework involving multiple partners, which may introduce constraints related to coordination, scheduling, and task prioritization. Part of the work also depends on the availability and quality of data or simulations, which may lead to uncertainties in delivery timelines.
