The general goal of the project is to better understand how a precise and robust transcriptional response is established in no more than 3 minutes downstream of the Bicoid morphogen gradient in young fruit fly embryos. Towards this goal, ongoing transcription in living embryos will be analyzed, using the MS2 experimental approach, which combines the fluorescent labeling of nascent mRNA with live-cell imaging at high spatial and temporal resolution and which was recently adapted to developing fly embryos. Combining genetics and optogenetics with these live-imaging approaches, the project aims to identify mutants or genetic variants altering the dynamics of the Bicoid response and characterize the contribution of spatial vs temporal correlations in the system. A specific emphasis will be put on deciphering the role of the transcription machinery and chromatin in the process.


We are aiming to recruit a highly motivated biologist with strong experimental skills to study the transcriptional response downstream of the Bicoid morphogen gradient in a collaborative multidisciplinary project.


The success of the project relies on fruitful interactions with biophysicists and theoreticians who will help to quantitatively analyze the data and use data driven modeling to shed light on the process. Motivation for interdisciplinarity and quantitative biology is essential. Experience in fruit fly genetics and/or advanced imaging and image analysis would be an advantage. Prior experimental experience and a desire for quantification.

Work Context

The research will be carried out in the group of Aleksandra Walczak with the wet lab work carried out in the laboratory of Nathalie Dostatni at the Curie Institute, which is 3 minutes away on foot. The project is a multidisciplinary endavour, with fréquent meetings between the two teams and constant discussions.
