Missions

The researcher will work in the context of the ERC Starting Grant research program MAGNETO, which deals with the study of magnetorheological elastomers and hierarchical instabilities under the supervision of Prof. Kostas Danas. The researcher will be a part of a team of PhD and other postdoctoral students as well as a member of the Solid Mechanics Laboratory of Ecole Polytechnique, which gathers a large number of researchers, PhD students and postdoc associates in a large variety of subjects related to solid mechanics.

Activities

The researcher will mainly contribute to the numerical development of nonlinear models for electro-magneto-elastic soft solids with an emphasis on thin magnetoelastic membranes as well as the development of new active materials with non-uniform albeit tuned deformation properties. He is expected to develop a number of numerical user elements and materials in various codes such as FEniCS and Deal.II.

Skills

The candidate should be at the final stages of his PhD with the possibility to continue to a postdoctoral appointment. Her/his PhD should be in the field of computational solid mechanics with emphasis on the modeling of electro- and magneto-elastic soft solids. The candidate should have a strong record of international experience (outside of France). The candidate should be fluent in English (writing, reading and speaking) and should already have a solid research experience in computational solid mechanics and particularly in the context of soft active electro- and magnetoelastic solids. He should be able to carry out research independently as well as transfer knowledge to younger PhD students related to the project.

Work Context

The research work will be conducted at the Laboratory of Solid Mechanics (LMS), Ecole Polytechnique and will be funded by the ERC Starting Grant MAGNETO via CNRS. The candidate should be at the final stages of his PhD in the field of computational solid mechanics with strong international experience and solid knowledge of electro- and magnetoelastic materials.

Constraints and risks

No particular constraints are involved with the proposed project. The researcher will participate in international conferences. (S)he is also expected to aid (to a very small extent) with the maintenance of the cluster in the LMS.
