Missions
Multicellular organisms may adapt their phenotypes to environmental conditions thanks to phenotypic plasticity. We are interested in the link between phenotypic plasticity and adaptation to the environment. We have identified a suitable system for such study: splash-cups of the basal plant Marchantia polymorpha, which are organs involved in dispersal. Vegetative propagules, known as gemmae, are dispersed away
from the parent plant by raindrops bouncing off splash-cups. Is the morphology of splash-cups optimal for dispersal? The postdoc will characterise the efficiency of dispersal of a splash-cup as a function of its geometry, in terms of number of gemmae dispersed and reach of dispersal. To do so, she/he will use approaches from fluid mechanics.
Activities
The postdoc will develop kinematic models of the splash in the limit where inertia dominates. She/he will use approaches from differential geometry to define optimal surfaces for jet production.
