Missions
Design and installation of laser systems (continuous laser source, optoelectronic elements, control and servo electronics).
Maintenance of continuous laser systems and their integration into a device for producing ultra-cold atoms.
Optimisation of sample preparation parameters.
Drawing up measurement protocols
Participating in data collection.
Activités
The person recruited will contribute to fundamental physics experiments based on ultra-cold atoms. The experimental system uses a set of lasers to manipulate atomic vapours under ultra-high vacuum, and bring them into an ultra-cold regime conducive to the study of quantum phenomena. It is therefore a sophisticated instrument, with numerous lasers (ECDL, fibre), stabilised in frequency and controlled by optoelectronic elements to produce a time sequence accurate to the microsecond.
The person recruited will join the team to participate in the development of this instrumental system. The system is organised into modules. The person recruited will bring new functionalities to the experiment by building new modules, organised around laser sources with a precise function for the ultra-cold gas: collimation of the atomic beam, manipulation of the electronic state of the atoms, etc. In addition, the person recruited will contribute to the maintenance of the many modules that already make up the instrument, and to the optimisation of the parameters for the production of an ultra-cold gas and the control of its quantum properties.
Finally, the person recruited will be involved in the scientific studies carried out on the instrument. These studies currently focus on measuring the photoassociation spectrum of strontium 87 on its intercombination line. In the short term, they will evolve towards the manipulation of the magnetic properties of the sample through the photoassociation phenomenon. The person recruited will therefore be involved in drawing up experimental protocols and collecting experimental data.
Compétences
- in-depth knowledge of continuous lasers, optics (Gaussian beam propagation) and basic electronics skills.
- Excellent teamwork skills are required.
- Candidates must be fluent in English to be able to participate in internal and external communication activities.
- General knowledge of laser cooling and atom-light interaction (quantum physics) will be appreciated.
Contexte de travail
The work will take place at the Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers, on the Sorbonne Paris Nord University campus in Villetaneuse. The person recruited will join the Magnetic Quantum Gases group ( https://gqm.lpl.univ-paris13.fr/ ), which is currently running three cold atom experiments in parallel - two of which involve the strontium atom - with close technical links.
Two CNRS researchers, a CNRS research engineer and two PhD students are involved in the project associated with this post. The research group also includes three teacher-researchers, a post-doctoral student and a PhD student working on other cold atom devices. Close links are maintained with all these people and their activities, both informally and via weekly organisational meetings.
Contraintes et risques
The work takes place at Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers. It is a full-time employment, on standard work days from Monday to Friday, organized for team work.
Standard safety protocols have to be followed for the hazards of a laboratory environment, in particular laser hazard (CW class IV lasers).
