Missions

The objective of the ChiPheQua project is to develop a new enantiospecific synthesis method for the rapid and precise construction of hard-to-access small molecules containing a quaternary stereocenter, using chiral phenonium ions as a control element to overcome current synthetic limitations. Based on preliminary results, by combining organocatalytic/(super)acid activations, enantioenriched phenonium ions will be rationally designed, studied, and used to provide access to optically active molecular building blocks with high synthetic value.

Activities

Organic synthesis will constitute the majority of the selected candidate's activities for this project. The chosen individual will also be responsible for the purification and spectroscopic characterization (NMR, MS) of the obtained compounds. Writing articles, specifically the experimental sections, will also fall under the recruited person's responsibilities. Lastly, the individual will be expected to contribute to the technical operations of the laboratory alongside other staff members: ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, and managing stock and reaction waste.

Skills

Practical and theoretical knowledge of organic synthesis
Skills in organic compound chemistry/purification
Proficiency in spectroscopic analysis techniques (NMR, MS, etc.)
Proficiency with chemistry-related software tools (electronic lab notebook, drawing software, etc.)
Knowledge and experience in enantioselective catalysis would be an asset
Good command of the English language (reading, writing, speaking, minimum level B2).

Work Context

The "Stereochemistry and Organic Reactivity" (StéRéO) team, part of the Institute of Molecular Sciences of Marseille (ISM2), is located on the Saint-Jérôme science campus in Marseille. This team consists of chemists (24 members, including 12 permanent staff) developing research themes in organic synthesis methodology. More specifically, we focus on developing enantioselective, organic, and homogeneous organometallic catalysis methods. As a result, the applications of the chemistry we develop range from natural product synthesis to biology, as well as physics, with examples including organic lithography and materials science.

Constraints and risks
