Job Description

Missions

The successful candidate will conduct epidemiological research to investigate associations between biomarkers measured during pregnancy and/or at birth—particularly cytokines and neurotrophins—and child neurodevelopment during early childhood, with a particular focus on social skills.

They will contribute to clarifying the potential role of these biomarkers in the relationships between early psychosocial determinants and neurodevelopmental trajectories.

The analyses will primarily draw on data from the EDEN and ELFE general-population birth cohorts.

Activity

Take ownership of, document, quality-check, and prepare databases from the EDEN and ELFE cohorts.

Contribute to the formulation of research questions, hypotheses, and statistical analysis plans.

Develop and implement statistical analyses appropriate for longitudinal and observational data, including descriptive analyses, multivariable regression models, confounder adjustment, sensitivity analyses, and, where justified, mediation analyses.

Produce reproducible R scripts covering data preparation, analyses, and visualisation of results.

Interpret, synthesise, and discuss findings with the scientific team and project partners.

Write scientific articles in English for international peer-reviewed journals.

Present findings at team meetings, seminars, and national and international conferences.

Depending on project needs, contribute to the supervision of students or interns and to the transfer of data-analysis skills.

Your Profil

Skills

Education and experience

PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, data science, applied mathematics for biological data, or a related discipline.

Experience in research-data analysis, ideally involving longitudinal, perinatal, or population-based cohorts.

Research experience in neurodevelopment, neurodevelopmental disorders, mental health, inflammation, or biomarkers would be an asset.

Technical skills

Excellent command of R for the management, cleaning, documentation, and statistical analysis of complex datasets.

Strong knowledge of regression methods, confounder adjustment, missing-data handling, and sensitivity analyses.

Expertise in, or a strong interest in, causal inference methods and mediation analyses.

Ability to produce reproducible, traceable, and well-documented analyses.

Proficiency in standard office software and in preparing tables, figures, and presentation materials.

Good written and spoken scientific English.

Transferable skills

Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative, multidisciplinary project.

Methodological rigour, critical thinking, and the ability to interpret complex results cautiously.

Excellent writing skills in both French and English.

Strong organisational skills, ability to meet deadlines, and capacity to manage several activities in parallel.

Awareness of the ethical, regulatory, and confidentiality issues associated with the use of health data.

Your Work Environment

The EDEN and ELFE general-population birth cohorts in France aim to improve knowledge of the environmental, family, social, and biological factors influencing children's physical and psychological development, health, and socialisation.

As part of previously funded projects, biomarkers—particularly cytokines and neurotrophins—have been measured in maternal blood during pregnancy and/or in samples collected at birth. The postdoctoral researcher will analyse these biological data in relation to indicators of neurodevelopment and social skills collected during early childhood.

The successful candidate will join a research team investigating the biological, environmental, and psychosocial determinants of neurodevelopment, with a particular interest in neurodevelopmental disorders and autism. They will collaborate with epidemiologists, biostatisticians, and biologists.

The position involves regular exchanges with partners based at different institutions, as well as participation in videoconference meetings and, occasionally, travel for scientific meetings or conferences.

Constraints and risks

Predominantly screen-based work, with daily use of R for data management, statistical analysis, and data visualisation.

Handling pseudonymised data from birth cohorts; strict compliance with confidentiality, IT security, personal-data protection requirements, and data-access procedures is essential.

Collaboration with several teams may require regular coordination and a degree of organisational flexibility.
