Job Description
Missions
We are recruiting a bioinformatics engineer (or computational structural biologist) to work on a project at the interface of microbiology, structural biology, and bioinformatics. This project focuses on the membrane complex of the Type VI secretion system (T6SS) and aims to investigate its integration into the bacterial envelope as well as its impact on cellular physiology.
The main mission will be to analyze and integrate proteomics data (notably from proteomic analyses) and structural predictions (AlphaFold) in order to characterize the protein interaction networks involved in the assembly and function of the T6SS.
Activity
- Exploitation of structural predictions (AlphaFold) to characterize protein–protein interactions and associated networks.
- Development of bioinformatics approaches for structural modeling, network analysis (PPIN), and large-scale data mining.
- Genomic and evolutionary analyses to explore the conservation, diversity, and co-evolution of T6SS components and their partners.
- Exploitation and integration of proteomics data (notably AP-MS) to identify T6SS interaction partners.
- Close collaboration with experimental teams to interpret results and guide analyses.
- Development of reproducible pipelines and visualization of results (figures, scientific reports).
Your Profil
Skills
Education: Master's degree or engineering degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or structural biology. Experience in scientific programming, bioinformatics data analysis, and/or structural modeling is a plus.
Technical skills:
1. Proficiency in Python and/or R for data analysis.
2. Experience with structural modeling tools (e.g., AlphaFold) and 3D model visualization/analysis is appreciated.
3. Skills in protein–protein interaction network (PPIN) analysis using Cytoscape or Python (NetworkX) are appreciated.
4. Skills in genomic and evolutionary analysis (sequence comparison, phylogeny, co-evolution) are appreciated.
5. Use of Git for code management and reproducible environments.
6. Proficiency in English (reading, writing, and speaking; scientific literature and international interactions).
Personal qualities
Rigor, autonomy, initiative, and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
Your Work Environment
The work will be carried out at the IGS (Information Génomique et Structurale Laboratory), in close collaboration with the VN2M (Virulence Nano-Macromolecular Machinosome) team at the LCB (Laboratoire de Chimie Bactérienne), as part of an ongoing collaborative project.
Within the LCB, the “Virulence Nano-Macromolecular Machinosome” (VN2M) team, led by Eric Durand, studies the architecture and function of the T6SS nanomachine using genetic, biochemical, and structural approaches. The laboratory offers a complete technical environment for bacterial biomass production and structural characterization (electron microscopy, crystallography, etc.).
In collaboration with IGS, the engineer will contribute to innovative bioinformatics approaches, particularly the dynamic modeling of protein complexes and the exploration of protein–protein interactions, within a stimulating and multidisciplinary environment.
The IGS laboratory is a pioneer and world leader in the study of giant viruses. It contributed to the discovery of Mimivirus, the first giant virus, and identified the three other known families. The strength of IGS lies in the close integration of bioinformatics and experimental teams, enabling research from the isolation of new microorganisms to their full characterization using combined approaches including genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. The laboratory also has strong expertise in structural biology, allowing the determination of 3D structures of viral proteins of interest using crystallography and by combining crystallography with electron microscopy.
