Missions
The mission is part of the DIAMS exploratory project of the DIADEM PEPR, which aims to set up nationwide platforms for the accelerated design of metal alloys for structural applications. The recruited person will be responsible for implementing and implementing for research projects a high-throughput characterization platform using X-rays on a synchrotron beamline for the partners of the DIAMS project and more generally for the projects proposed in DIADEM requiring this platform (OPTISCRAPS for example).
This ITM (in-situ thermo-mechanical characterization) platform consists of a set of mobile thermomechanical tools to perform in situ experiments on the high-energy beamline as well as a high-capacity detector. Its objective is to achieve the quantitative determination of metallurgical evolutions, resolved in time but also in space, of chemical compositions (concept of combinatorial metallurgy) of complex alloys along thermal and thermomechanical paths representative of industrial pathways.
The person recruited will be based at the ESRF (line ID31), in conjunction with the IJL laboratories in Nancy and SIMAP in Grenoble. This project is also part of a CombiMet Long Term Project providing 12 days per year of experiments on the ID31 line during the period of the proposed contract. The ITM platform consists of a plasto-dilatometer adapted to synchrotron lines, a transportable furnace for combinatorial metallurgy, and a Dectris Eiger 4M detector (shared with the BM02 line).
Activities
- Handling of thermo-mechanical tools: optimization of their capacities with regard to project problems, use of tools outside the X-ray beam in off-line mode ;
- The conduct of a research project in conjunction with the IJL and SIMAP laboratories, using the platform's tools. This research project will aim to better understand the mechanisms of bainitic transformation under mechanical loading ;
- Support for users of the DIAMS project and other DIADEM projects during synchrotron experiments using these tools ;
- The continuous improvement of the platform's tools on the ID31 beamline, in conjunction with the line's staff for interfacing, and the maintenance of know-how for the coordination between thermomechanical instruments and detection (synchronization).
Skills
Technical competences :
- Good knowledge of metallurgy and thermal treatments of alloys (dilatometry) and mechanical tests (hot tensile tests) ;
- Knowledge of X-ray diffraction and the use of synchrotron beamlines, preferably at high energy ;
- Fluency in oral and written English ;
- Ability to process synchrotron / diffraction data (phase quantification, determination of strains/stresses).
Professional competences :
- Listening and proximity to the field in order to improve working conditions according to the needs of users ;
- Sense of contact within the framework of a multi-site team ;
- Adaptability to meet user needs ;
- Rigor and organization to carry out the project.
Desired qualifications and experience :
- Specialized course in materials engineering and/or metallurgy.
- A thesis or research experience in fields close to those of the PEPR DIADEM (https://www.pepr-diadem.fr/).
Work Context
The person recruited will be based at the ESRF on line ID31, in conjunction with the "Microstructures and stresses" team of the Institut Jean Lamour in Nancy.
The Institute Jean Lamour (IJL) is a joint research unit of CNRS and Université de Lorraine.
Focused on materials and processes science and engineering, it covers: materials, metallurgy, plasmas, surfaces, nanomaterials and electronics.
By 2025, IJL has 259 permanent staff (34 researchers, 133 teacher-researchers, 92 IT-BIATSS) and 374 non-permanent staff (136 doctoral students, 48 post-doctoral students / contractual researchers and more than 190 trainees), from some sixty different nationalities.
Partnerships exist with 150 companies and our research groups collaborate with more than 60 countries throughout the world.
Its exceptional instrumental platforms are spread over 4 sites ; the main one is located on Artem campus in Nancy.
Recruitment will be subject to the agreement for access to the IJL's ZRR given by the security and defence officer (https://www.legifrance.gouv.fr/jorf/id/JORFTEXT000026140136.
The position is located in a sector under the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST), and therefore requires, in accordance with the regulations, that your arrival is authorized by the competent authority of the MESR.
