Missions

We are looking for candidates for a postdoctoral position in the area of gravitational waves observations, covering a broad range of its aspects from analysis and exploitation of the data to phenomenological and theoretical modelling and interpretation, including multi-messenger aspects. In particular, we are interested in linking numerical simulations of binary neutron star mergers to the gravitational wave observations.

The position is funded by CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) and envisaged for two years starting the earliest in April 2022.
The work is to be carried out in the context of the newly created International Research Laboratory, Centre Pierre Binétruy based on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley, US. The successful candidate is expected to work with the Virgo and LISA groups at the AstroParticule and Cosmology Laboratory in Paris and develop an active collaboration with the node of the Network for Neutrinos, Nuclear Astrophysics, and Symmetries (N3AS) based at the University of California at Berkeley. The candidate will have the opportunity to spend a significant period of time in Berkeley with details of the specific arrangements to be discussed.

Activities

Activities will include
1. analysing LIGO-Virgo O4 data searching for gravitational wave signals
2. inferring cosmological parameters and astrophysical models using already observed gravitational wave signals as well as testing General relativity theory
3. Designing search for merging neutron stars with the 3rd generation of gravitational wave detectors.

Skills

We search for a young scientist with PhD in Physics or Astrophysics within past 5 years and with no more than 2 past post-doctoral contracts. Good knowledge of English is needed. Good computational skills are essential.

Work Context

As already mentioned, this position will take place at APC (AstroParticle and Cosmologie) within the Gravitation group for the first year and at Berkeley for the second year (negotiable). The Gravitation group is involved in Virgo, ET, LISA and PTA projects covering a complete gravitational wave spectrum.
