Job Description
Missions
The researcher will formulate and advance areas of theoretical ocean
physics, such as variational methods for ocean dynamical and
thermodynamic equations of motion via Hamilton's principle; theories
of waves, instabilities, turbulence, and circulation; waves and mean
flow interactions; and novel methods for ocean numerical models.
Activity
- Formulate mathematical equations of ocean physical processes, including waves, instabilities, turbulence, and general circulation.
- Extend these equations to their variational formulation as a means to expose underlying symmetries, and to formulate approximate theories and numerical methods that preserve conservation laws.
-Examine the potential for these theories to be of use for the studies of waves, instabilities, multi-scale interactions, and turbulent phenomena in the ocean.
-Consider how the mathematical insights can be leveraged for advancing fundamental understanding as well as numerical methods for ocean models.
-Write peer-reviewed journal papers and present research results.
Your Profil
Skills
-Expert in mathematical physics, such as methods of partial differential equations, differential geometry, and tensor analysis.
-Expert in theoretical mechanics, such as Hamilton's principle, geometric mechanics, ray theory, wave theory, instability theory, and turbulence theory.
- Fluency in English (oral and written)
- Organizational abilities, strong self-motivation, and curiosity
-Ability to work alone as well as within collaborations
Your Work Environment
The position is within a vibrant group of theoretical, numerical, and
observational ocean and climate physicists, biogeochemists, and
engineers at LOCEAN, along with a community of 40-50 graduate students
and postdocs. LOCEAN is within the Sorbonne Universite and is located
in the Latin Quarter of Paris, which offers a wealth of intellectual
and cultural opportunities and exchanges. The postdoc position is
funded from the Choose France for Science award under the AFOCUS
project (Advancing French Ocean and Climate Understanding and
Simulations).
