Job Description
Missions
Predict the long-term evolution of galaxy morphology within clusters by quantifying how gravitational fluctuations induce orbital diffusion conditional on cluster properties.
Demonstrate how these perturbations, ranging from the interstellar medium to the galaxy cluster scale, act as the primary driver for the secular morphological transformation of galaxies and the formation of bars.
Develop a theoretical framework via multi-scale orbital averaging to model the dynamical heating of galaxies within their cosmic context.
Quantify the relative role of orbital diffusion induced by baryonic physics (supernova explosions, molecular clouds) versus that induced by collisional dark matter (SIDM) or fuzzy dark matter (Fuzzy DM), in order to constrain the latter.
Activity
Construct physically motivated power spectra that approximate substructures in a galaxy cluster and the fluctuations induced by collisional or wave dark matter.
Perform the orbital averaging calculation of diffusion coefficients conditional on this multi-scale environment.
Implement an analysis pipeline for simulations and define measurable metrics for comparison.
Validate theoretical predictions through direct comparison with measurements from numerical simulations, then refine the approximations.
Your Profil
Skills
Completion level of a PhD thesis in astrophysics or a related field.
Excellent know-how of theoretical galactic dynamics and kinetic theory (particularly the Fokker-Planck equation applied to orbital averages).
Ability to formulate scaling relations linking diffusion mechanisms to observable quantities.
Technical knowledge to exploit and analyze data from high-resolution "zoom-in" simulations as well as large-volume cosmological simulations.
Your Work Environment
The project will take place at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris, in collaboration with Christophe Pichon's team funded by the ANR GalBar (https://www.secular-bars.org/). The duration of the contract will be 6 months. The contract is expected to start in early December 2026. Beyond this collaboration, the project will require interaction with KASI in Korea (lead of the K-drift project).
