Job Description

Missions

The primary mission of the Robotics Engineer is to lead the software infrastructure, hardware integration, and operational validation of a collision avoidance chain for event-based drones. The overarching goal is to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application, ultimately delivering a mature TRL 7 demonstration in quasi-operational conditions that replicate the constraints of commercial missions.

Activity

- Simulation Infrastructure: Develop a comprehensive simulation environment that replicates the perception pipeline of event-based cameras and the drone hardware for benchmarking algorithms.
- Embedded Integration: Port and optimize motion generation algorithms onto embedded computational hardware, such as the onboard NVidia Jetson and other AI accelerators (GPU/NPU), ensuring the solution is frugal and reactive enough for autonomous flight.
- Operational Optimization & Rules of the Air: Adapt the motion planning software to meet strict operational constraints, focusing specifically on integrating air traffic regulations, restricted flight zones (geofencing), and standard safety requirements.
- Industrial Collaboration: Work closely with industrial partners (e.g., Neurobus) to integrate the software stack into the final hardware demonstrator and ensure compatibility with commercial drone standards.
- Operational Validation: Lead the experimental validation campaigns, progressing from indoor tests to realistic outdoor field conditions to robustify the software implementation for TRL 6 and TRL 7 demonstrations

Your Profil

Skills

- Education: M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in Robotics, Embedded Systems, or Computer Science.
- Technical Expertise: Strong expertise in embedded computing and drone hardware.
- Development: Proficiency in C++, Python, and ROS.
- Specific Knowledge: Knowledge of event-based vision (neuromorphic engineering) is highly desirable.
- Soft Skills: A strong interest in working at the interface of academic research and industry.

Your Work Environment

The candidate will be attached to IRISA's Rainbow team.
The IR activities will naturally fit in with our many activities over the last few years on robust planning problems for robotics.

The team's experimental platforms include an indoor room instrumented by vicon for experiments with several quadrotors, four manipulator arms (two 6 DOF industrial manipulators and two 7 DOF torque-controlled manipulators), and a 6 DOF haptic device. Finally, two research engineers (technical staff) will assist the PostDoc with hardware/software development and maintenance of the robotic platforms.
